Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.
The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
