Hurricane Melissa is predicted to escalate to a uncommon Category 5 storm as it shifts towards the Caribbean island, bringing life-threatening flash flooding and rock falls.

The cyclone, which recorded winds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is currently turning north-west in the Caribbean and is projected to hit the coast by early next week, as reported by hurricane specialists.

Warnings of power cuts and structural damage have been released as the hurricane produces up to 30 inches of rainfall and storm surges as high as 13ft above ground. "Seek shelter now," inhabitants have been urged.

This hurricane is the thirteenth hurricane in the current Atlantic storm period, which usually concludes in the eleventh month.

Category Five Cyclone Danger

A category five hurricane is the most intense classification, with winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

Although Melissa is set to weaken to a Category 4 storm before arriving at Jamaica, meteorologists said there was "very little practical difference in the overall impacts" upon landfall, and that the hurricane will be "at least that intensity" when it strikes the country.

Critical Readiness Measures

With storm-force gusts and precipitation anticipated well in advance long before it crosses Jamaica's central region - including potentially the city of Kingston - warnings state that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"An extended timeframe of damaging winds and intense precipitation have begun and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening rapid water accumulation and many landslides," counseled weather authorities.

The nation's leader the official stated: "I realize that there are many Jamaicans who are anxious, who are extremely apprehensive, and appropriately: concern is justified.

"But the optimal approach to handle worry and any apprehension and anxiety is to stay ready."

Locals are being instructed to protect their properties with sandbags and plywood sheets, and to stock up on essentials.

Regional Impact

Alerts are also active for parts of the neighboring country such as the capital, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is expected to bring similar effects by the midweek period.

Mudslides presently generated by the storm have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Projected Path

Melissa is forecast to pass over the island nation by the middle of the week before traveling via the Caribbean archipelago and entering the Atlantic Ocean.

By the time it arrives at the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have reduced to a third-level storm.

Climate Connection

While it is difficult to connect specific storms to environmental shifts, scientists say it is making weather phenomena increasingly frequent and more extreme.
