Astronaut Discloses Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
